The Green Line Public Transit Project has been a priority for the Calgary Alliance for the Common Good since 2020 because it is essential for providing affordable transportation, connecting communities, and building a green economy. In addition, it reduces air pollution and traffic congestion and improves access to affordable housing options. 

A decision about the Green Line is coming before our City Council’s Executive Committee on Tuesday, September 8. You can read the proposals here: https://pub-calgary.escribemeetings.com/filestream.ashx?DocumentId=372814

We are asking our members to write to the Calgary Mayor and City Council and emphasize that people in North Central Calgary need improved transit now. 

As an Alliance, we are calling on the Council to:

  1. Build the Green Line to at least the 10th Ave Beltline station. 
  2. Continue the work of securing funding so that the Green Line can be built through downtown and then north along Centre Street. This needs to be the priority because it is where the need is greatest. 
  3. Begin investing in and building a BRT line that can serve North Central Calgary now, and that is built in a way that lays the physical and ridership foundation for the North leg of the Green Line LRT.  

Here is a sample letter you can modify and send to our Mayor and City Council:

Dear Mayor and City Council,

The Green Line project is essential for Calgarians, especially for those living in North Central Calgary, where the need is greatest. People need accessible, affordable, and quality public transportation now. When council meets to make decisions about the Green Line, I am asking council to:

    1. Build the Green Line to at least the 10th Ave Beltline station. 
    2. Continue the work of securing funding so that the Green Line can be built through downtown and then north along Centre Street where the need is the greatest.
    3. Begin investing in and building a BRT line that can serve North Central Calgary now, and that is built in a way that lays the physical and ridership foundation for the North leg of the Green Line LRT.  

Quality public transportation is essential to building a vibrant city where all Calgarians can thrive. This is a project that will shape our city for generations to come. We must build it right for the future, while meeting the needs of Calgarians today.
