As we enter this season of generosity and interconnection, we invite you to take part in our beloved Mitten Tree tradition.

This year, our Mitten Tree will support the Aboriginal Friendship Centre of Calgary, an organization that has served Indigenous peoples in Calgary for more than six decades. The Centre provides cultural programs, youth and family support, community outreach, and essential resources to help Indigenous individuals and families thrive in an urban setting. Guided by values of respect, reciprocity, and community care, their work strengthens cultural connection and supports our neighbours in times of need.

Together, through this simple tradition, we embody our Unitarian Universalist values of compassion, justice, and the interdependent web that holds us all.

How to Participate

Bring new winter items—mittens, hats, scarves, socks, or other warm clothing—as well as basic hygiene items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, hand cream, or soaps. Place your gifts under the Mitten Tree or in the donation box in the Barker Room (where we hang our coats and pick up our name tags).

Why It Matters

  • Your gifts will help keep individuals and families warm and cared for during the coldest months of the year.
  • This practice is a meaningful expression of our shared commitment to truth, reconciliation, and community care.
  • It’s a wonderful way to teach our children—and remind ourselves—how small acts of kindness ripple outward.

Let us come together once again to nurture this tradition of warmth and connection, extending the love of our community far beyond our walls.

With gratitude,
Rev. Samaya
