Alberta’s recent use of the notwithstanding clause to override Charter rights for transgender children and youth is not just a legal maneuver—it’s a moral one, and it comes at a real human cost. Trans youth already face higher risks of discrimination, isolation, and self-harm. Policies that erase their identities or limit their rights only make that worse.

The Unitarian Universalist Our Whole Lives (OWL) program teaches that every person has inherent worth, that young people flourish when they are supported, and that healthy communities are built on honesty, respect, and compassion. These are not abstract ideals—they are the foundation for safe, thriving lives.

When governments signal that some children’s identities are negotiable or expendable, it sends a chilling message to families, educators, and health-care providers who work tirelessly to protect these youth. Affirmation saves lives. Evidence shows it. Human dignity demands it.

Alberta has a choice: to stand with its children, to protect and celebrate them, or to legislate harm. The path forward must be rooted in compassion, evidence, and respect for every young person’s humanity. Trans youth deserve nothing less.
