Update on Our Music Program

Thank you to everyone who joined the conversation last month about the future of music at Calgary Unitarians. We are excited to share the next steps as we continue to nurture a vibrant and joyful music program together. Here’s what the plan looks like:

  • Over the next three months, we will be rotating through 10 hymns to deepen our congregational familiarity and singability. Song leaders will guide the congregation in singing these hymns.
  • We are thrilled that Matthew has agreed to serve as our pianist at Sunday services until a new Music Director is hired.
  • Ned will lead UUphonia, and Brandis and Marcia will lead Nous Ensemble in providing monthly anthems drawn from our music library.
  • A Music Director search committee has been formed, with Susan, Charlene, and Rev. Samaya, supported by Brandis behind the scenes.
  • Susan, Lillias, and Christopher have agreed to catalogue our music library, ensuring our collection is organized and accessible for all.

We are grateful for the generosity, talent, and commitment of all who are contributing to this transition. Your participation, enthusiasm, and voices continue to shape the future of music at Calgary Unitarians.

Lay Chaplaincy 101 : Basics Training for Rites of Passages

***Save the Dates 2026***

Interested in becoming a UU Lay Chaplain?

The CUC's National Lay Chaplains Committee will again be offering and facilitating the annual Basics Training for Rites of Passages, and also continuing with the successful LC Chats in the upcoming months.

Registration and details will follow soon.

Dates for the training (1 cohort) are: Saturday April 11, Sunday April 12 and Saturday April 18, 2026.  Training will be delivered via Zoom.   A certificate will be issued to those who complete the required 3 sessions.  This training is intended for those who are interested in pursuing the Lay Chaplaincy path, have been members of their congregation or fellowship for at least a year and have the endorsement of their congregational board.

The Canadian Unitarian Council’s unique lay chaplaincy program trains and supports carefully chosen lay members of Unitarian Universalist congregations who create and perform rites of passage, including weddings, child dedications, and memorial services. Lay chaplains are pleased to provide this outreach service to people who want a religious or spiritual ceremony: both to the general public and to Unitarian Universalists in congregations without a minister.

World Religion Day

Sunday, January 18th at 7:30 pm online

As we step into this new year together, the Calgary Interfaith Council is turning their attention to an important moment: World Religion Day. Each year, this service invites us to widen our hearts and our horizons—to learn from the wisdom of many faith traditions and to deepen our commitment to living together with curiosity, respect, and compassion.

The theme for this year’s World Religion Day is Fostering a Sense of Belonging in a Polarized Society. In a time when division and disconnection can feel overwhelming, this theme calls us to reflect on what it truly means to belong—to a community, to a wider human family, and to a shared future. What practices help us bridge difference? How do we remain rooted in our own values while staying open to others? And what can the world’s religions teach us about connection, dignity, and care across lines of belief and identity?

We are excited to explore these questions together and to create a service that both challenges and nourishes us. To register for the event, please contact Rev. Samaya as the final details were still in progress as this article went to print.

Rev. Samaya is not in the office on Wednesdays as that is when she focuses on sermon writing.
